And they refuse to answer your pitiful pleading for an idea—any idea—how to write what you need to write. We’ve all been there (probably more times than we’d like to admit). To climb out of writer’s block and summon my writing vibes back, I often have to just start writing. Writing a smattering of garbage can prime the pump until the good stuff starts flowing again. If you can’t stomach the idea of writing your actual piece garbage-style, writing prompts can be an excellent stand in. Here are three fun, fast, low-pressure writing prompts to shake you out of your slump: 1. The New Place Prompt You wake up in the middle of an unfamiliar city, on the sidewalk. You don’t recognize anything or anyone, but you can tell it’s a busy morning with people bustling all around you. Write a quick scene—just a few paragraphs—about the people you see and what you would do to get your bearings. 2. The Petty Superpower Prompt You gain a superpower. But it’s incredibly specific and kind of lame. Think: the ability to instantly untangle headphone cords, or always pick the fastest grocery line. How do you discover this superpower? (I’d actually love this one.) How do you use it? Be as dramatic as possible about your very dumb gift. 3. The Left Turn Prompt Write a few lines of a totally normal scene: a job interview, a coffee date, a work meeting. Then, halfway through, take a hard left turn. Something absurd happens. A raccoon crashes through the window. The interviewer turns into a bat. You discover the barista is your long-lost twin. Don’t overthink it…just follow the chaos. Set a timer for ten minutes. No editing, no backspacing. Just type. My brother just sent me a writer’s block tool for just this purpose.
